Caught in the Crossfire: Navigating the MLB Microbetting Scandal

Baseball is also being questioned because the most popular stars in determining who will win, Who will lose, Which pitch that will be thrown, Who will be the third baseman, etc, are the relievers of the Cleveland Guardians; Luis L. Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase.

Both stars are on paid administrative leave; their lockers have been cleared in Progressive Field; the team morale is tainted with a cloud of suspicion.

Seth McClung, a former pitcher in the MLB, observes a crisis of confidence in the major league as gambling corruption began to fall out of control in Taiwan in the Chinese Professional Baseball League in the year 2013.

He points to such seemingly insignificant issues as a bad pitch as being the straw that breaks the camel.

Advanced analytics highlight possible acts of fraud more than ever, but this does not always lead to a violation of the law. The reduction in the rates by Lasse and Ortiz in 0-0 first-pitches has been the focus of attention with criticisms of a possible correlation with some strange betting patterns.

In the culture of the clubhouses of MLB, loyalty and not speaking out are inseparable. McClung adds, as speculation continues to circulate, none of his teammates have stepped forth. In one case, half of the men are thinking that it is whatever, and some men are thinking we are out here and trying to win something much bigger than a 1000 dollar prop bet.

This scandal reminds of later periods of baseball. To McClung it is like the steroid era, where the league made money and the players tried to win with everything possible at hand and that included drugs.

He states that being responsible should not only be a problem to be handled by players only; teams that recruit compromised players should also be punished.

Other leagues have the opportunity to avoid the bullet that MLB is wrestling with outlined above. The multi-person, multi-faceted nature of the sport makes it more difficult to manipulate, but issues such as the run/pass betting pools are also particularly vulnerable to exploitation, integrity experts warn. This is seen as the NBA has been left with a scar over the scandal involving Jontay Porter and other related investigations that revolve around the use of props.

In a sobering conclusion, McClung states that there are warning signs and that, if nothing is done, this could turn into the “Pete Rose 2.0” moment, a scandal that would dwarf what is happening right now.
