NBA Summer League: Players to watch

This year’s No. 1 overall pick, Cooper Flagg, is the main attraction. He’ll debut with the Mavericks against the Lakers on July 10, a game that also marks Bronny James’ much-anticipated Summer League debut. Flagg and Harper are set for another marquee showdown on July 12.

Dylan Harper (No. 2 pick, Pacers) – Faces Edgecombe on July 10 and Flagg on July 12

VJ Edgecombe (No. 3 pick, Thunder) – Set to square off with Harper and Kneuppel

Kon Kneuppel (Hornets, No. 4 pick) – Highlight clash with Edgecombe on July 14

Ace Bailey (Wizards, No. 5 pick) – Goes up against Harper on July 14

NBA Summer League: Top teams in League history

Since the Summer League’s Las Vegas era began in 2004, some teams have stood out with dominant runs:

Sacramento Kings – 2 titles, including a perfect 5-0 in 2021

Portland Trail Blazers – 2 titles, went 4-1 in 2022

Los Angeles Lakers – 2 titles, notable 6-1 record in 2017

The Warriors, Bulls, Rockets, and Grizzlies have also had standout Summer League performances.

Why the NBA Summer League matters

The NBA Summer League isn’t just exhibition basketball. It’s the proving ground where rookies test their transition from college to pro. Coaches scout rotations, players earn G-League or NBA spots, and fans get a taste of what’s to come in the fall.

From buzzer-beaters to breakout stars, expect high energy, hard fouls, and highlight reels. For every Cooper Flagg or Bronny James, there’s an undrafted player fighting to make it big—and that’s what keeps fans coming back each July.
