Ohio’s gambling control agency says it is working with MLB on a probe involving Guardians.

The body in charge of sports gambling in Ohio says it is collaborating with Major League Baseball on the investigation of Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, but has no further comment.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission stated that on June 30, an Ohio licensed sportsbook warned it of suspicious betting activity on Guardians wagering events before being contacted by MLB.

In 2023, the commission initiated an independent inquiry into suspicious wagering activities on the University of Alabama baseball team.

The next meeting of the commission is scheduled for August 20. The commission has been asked to outlaw player-specific microbets by Governor Mike DeWine. Two pitches that Ortiz threw during his starts against St. Louis on June 27 and Seattle on June 15 got more activity than normal are the subject of an investigation. A betting-integrity company reported the gambling activity on the pitches and sent the information to Major League Baseball.

“There is mounting evidence that Ohio sports are being negatively impacted by prop betting. Following threats against Ohio sportsmen, Major League Baseball has suspended two prominent Ohio professional athletes as part of a “sports betting investigation,” DeWine announced in a statement on July 31. “It is evident that the benefits outweigh the harm to sportsmen and the integrity of the game. This nation’s prop betting experiment has been a complete failure.
