Philadelphia to become the WNBA’s 18th Team

Philadelphia has been given a new WNBA team, which will play in 2030. Supported by HBSE and Comcast, this is the city’s long-awaited foray into women’s professional basketball and its first major pro team since 2008.

Philadelphia has been given a team by the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), the league announced today. The team is scheduled to start play in the 2030 season, pending approval from the NBA and WNBA Boards of Governors. With Comcast owning a minority stake, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) will own and run the South Philadelphia-based team.

The city will welcome both its first major professional sports team since 2008 and its first WNBA team, making this a historic moment.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert remarked, “Philadelphia is a city with unmatched passion, rich basketball tradition, and an unwavering love for its teams.” It’s only natural that a WNBA team has finally moved to this legendary sports town. Basketball is ingrained in Philadelphia, from community courts to iconic college arenas, and we’re honoured to bring the W to a city that is prepared to embrace it. We appreciate the leadership and dedication of Josh Harris, David Blitzer, David Adelman, Brian Roberts, and the whole ownership group in expanding the game and advancing women’s sports in our amazing town.
