NBA and MLB Push Back Against ‘Microbets’ Amid Gambling Scandals: Leagues and Unions Unite to Safeguard Integrity

Coming out of the controversies that have arisen over sports betting, major leagues such as the NBA and the MLB, after their player associations, all stand poised to nip in the bud the emergence of prop bets and microbets, at the expense of betting influenced revenues, but in the best interests of the health of the game and the health of the athletes.

NBA Takes Stand: scrutiny of the player props

The NBA in collaboration with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) are moving towards lobbying more restrictions on some prop bets with a specific emphasis on those that focus on individual play or other personal measures. The step is taken as there is increasing concern regarding corruption and bullying related to such bets. An NBA spokesperson indicated that its first priority is to uphold the integrity of our game, continuing: any regulatory framework must balance access by fans to the legal betting markets and protection against exploitation.

This is in the wake of a demonstratively high profile matter involving Jontay Porter, previously playing in the NBA on a two-way contract, who was suspended after owning up to manipulating his play to provide and benefit to bettors by wagering on his “unders” in two games.

Three other players Terry Rozier and Malik Beasley among them are under investigation by the federal authorities but no charges have been pressed.

A Wider Sports Betting Accounting

This regulatory buzz does not concern the NBA or MLB only. Some states, such as Ohio and New Jersey, are moving ahead with laws that would rein in or prohibit player prop bets generally, and those considered most likely to be subject to manipulation in particular. Following the NCAA placing a restriction on player-pro remotely after college, it was followed by Maryland, Ohio, Vermont and Louisiana in 2024.

What’s Next? Re-balancing Revenue vs.Integrity

Propositions, such as microbets, have become a significant component of sportsbook turnover- frequently underpinning high-margin same-game parlay products.
