What is a parlay bet and how does it work?

Home | Blogs & Guides | What is a parlay bet and how does it work?

Parlay bet is the American term. It combines multiple bets into one, with the total payout increasing as each selection wins. While the potential winnings can be impressive, the risk also goes up, one wrong pick and you lose the lot. Here’s how it works and how to use it smartly.

Parlay bets are a popular way to multiply your winnings by combining several selections into one bet. But while they offer bigger potential payouts, they also come with higher risk. Here’s how they work and what you should know before placing one.

What exactly is a parlay bet?

A Parley bet links two or more individual bets into a single wager. To win the accumulator, all individual selections (or “legs”) must win. If just one leg loses, the whole bet goes down. In the US, this is commonly known as a “parlay.” In the UK, you’ll hear it referred to as an “acca.”

How do the odds work?

With each added selection, your total odds increase. The winnings from one leg roll over to the next, meaning potential returns grow quickly. For example, if you back four football teams to win and each is priced at 2.00 (evens), your acca would return 16x your stake — but only if all four teams win.

Parlays are popular with punters because they allow small stakes to turn into big wins. You can place a $5 accumulator across multiple weekend matches and potentially win hundreds. They’re fun, exciting, and great for adding interest to multiple games at once.

What are the risks?

The risk lies in the “all or nothing” nature. Unlike single bets, one wrong result wipes out the entire parlays. While it’s tempting to stack in 6, 8, or even 10 selections, the chances of hitting all winners drop dramatically with each leg.

FAQs

What happens if one leg of my parlays is void?

If one leg is void (e.g., match cancelled), it’s usually removed and the acca adjusts to the remaining legs. Your stake isn’t lost unless a leg actually loses.

Can I cash out a parlay early?

Yes. Most bookies offer a cash-out feature which lets you settle the bet before all legs finish, depending on how your picks are doing.

Are parlays good for beginners?

They can be fun, but beginners should start small. Stick with 2–3 legs and don’t be tempted by unrealistic longshots with too many games.

What sports are best for parlays?

Football is the most common, but you can also create parlays on tennis, rugby, and even across different sports with some bookies.
