Jim Harbaugh was given a 10-year show-cause sentence by the NCAA, but Urban Meyer thinks the NFL ought to follow suit. Using Jim Tressel’s case as an example, Meyer says the league needs to make it clear if it abides by NCAA decisions.

The NCAA has imposed the final sanction on the University of Michigan for violations resulting from the Connor Stallion sign-stealing case. The verdict included a 10-year “show cause” order against Jim Harbaugh, the former Michigan coach and current Chargers coach.

Former Ohio State and Jaguars coach Urban Meyer feels Harbaugh should face an NFL suspension.

According to Karl Rasmussen of SI.com, Meyer stated on The Triple Option podcast, “There’s an elephant in the room here that no one’s talking about.” “when Ohio State suspended Jim Tressel after he was fired.” The National Football League’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, publicly declared that the punishment will be upheld. [Tressel] went to work in the replay department for the Indianapolis Colts. Jim Tressel was suspended by the Colts due to their respect for the NCAA and the suspension, which prevented him from playing in the season’s first six games.

Is it likely that the NFL will find a method to mimic Harbaugh’s NCAA sanction?

“I don’t think so,” Meyer remarked, “is there any chance that Roger Goodell and the NFL….

We have already brought attention to Tressel and former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor’s attempts by the NFL to mimic sanctions. The league didn’t have anything to say about it.

Still, that doesn’t mean nothing will occur. Only that the league isn’t making any comments.

Silence, however, is not acceptable. They have two options: they will either follow the precedent they have set or they will invent it as they go. Whatever they decide to do, they ought to make an announcement and provide an explanation.
