For the third year in a row, the Mississippi House will try to allow mobile sports betting. New legislation has been submitted in the legislature with the goal of convincing Senate lawmakers who have consistently expressed opposition.
The new bill, according to Saucier Republican House Gaming Committee Chairman Casey Eure, transferred all state revenue from online sports betting to the Public Employees’ Retirement System, which held about US$26 billion in unfunded obligations.
According to Eure, the clause addressed one of the Senate’s main concerns and was different from the plan from the previous year.

Eure added that the bill featured further concessions for MPs who had previously opposed legalization. Proponents persisted in citing the existence of an ongoing illicit betting market and the potential tax income that legal wagering may provide.
Senate Gaming Chairman David Blount told Mississippi Today that dedicating sports betting revenue to pensions would not justify legalization, arguing that projected revenue remained marginal compared with the system’s long-term funding gap.
